This week in maths we’ve been learning about sharing and fractions. We used play dough and lots of IWB activities to model halves and quarters.

Today we decorated two pumpkins. For many kids it was the first time they’ve ever touched the insides of the pumpkin, too (which is always hilarious). One bat, one witch.

We also learnt about adjectives and described the inside and outside of the pumpkin.

So proud of the kiddos. They did an awesome job!

It’s Nearly Time for Halloween!

If you’ve followed my blog over the last few years, you’ll know I’m absolutely CRAZY about Halloween.

That kind of makes me a bit odd, because here in Australia it’s not such a common holiday.

Although, Woolworths did have part of an aisle dedicated to Halloween goodies today, which made me ridiculously happy!

Anyway…

It’s not a huge deal over here as it is in the Northern Hemisphere, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get a huge kick out celebrating it with my class.

Waaaay back in 2011, I set up my first ‘spooky’ classroom to celebrate the holiday, egged on by my fabulous (Canadian) bestie, Alex. I may have used her as an excuse, but really, I don’t actually need an excuse to celebrate Halloween (because I’ve done so every year since I was about 10 years old!). Anyway… here’s the main feature from the classroom that year:

Awesome masking-tape spiderweb and spooky eye cut-outs all over the classroom! I just love masking tape, but man did it drive me crazy setting it up. My tip: invest in decent tape, not cheap tape – cheap tape rips ridiculously!

Last year, I had a new classroom, but I still HAD to do my spiderweb floor. I can’t help it – I just love it.

(You know I’ll totally be rocking the spiderweb again this year, right?!!)

Added extras last year: jack-o-lantern lights, Halloween lanterns, ‘fire’ pits (actually raffia bundles my Mum found somewhere originally intended to be used for a scarecrow!). Also, the teddies (Eddie and Toby) are wearing musical Halloween ties!

And I covered the classroom in pretend spiderwebs. Because I could!

As part of our developmental play program on Halloween, Alex bought some pumpkins for the kids to pull seeds out of and then carve. Again, not really a part of our culture here in Australia, but totally fun and the kids had a ball pulling out the seeds. It was a new experience for them and they loved it! (So did I!)

Right now I’m beginning to plot what we’ll be doing Halloween week. I’ve got the decorations, but I’ll be going through some themed activities for the kids, because it’s fun and special and they’ve been asking about Halloween ALL. YEAR. ❤

But now, I have some of my Halloween resources created last year for you. I was hoping to get some new ones up, but alas I’ve been extremely time-poor of late. I may still get some happening. We’ll just see. But for those of you who are after some quick games/activities for your kids in the upcoming season, maybe there’ll be something below for you to try!

Best of all, most of these are perfect for running off on coloured card because they’re predominately black and white! (Hooray for saving on printing costs!) Just click on the pictures to find out more about them!

What are YOU doing for Halloween?

Label the Trick-or-Treaters Pack & Friday Freebie

I’m having so much fun with labelling kits – they’re a great way to reinforce adjectives – and I had to make a set for Halloween using Nikki’s beautiful Halloween Kidlettes clipart. It was an exclusive bundle she released last weekend and it’s just adorable!

The pack contains 6 colour AND black & white labelling mats for trick-or-treaters in fantastic animal costumes.

The black & white mats can be printed and copied (either individually or onto coloured card stock and laminated for re-use. The colour ones could be laminated and used multiple times with whiteboard markers.

Super-cute and super-fun! Just in time for the Halloween holiday season.

You purchase it on TpT and Teachers Notebook.

Halloween Freebie – I’m a Little Pumpkin

Just made up this little pumpkin poem poster for my classroom and I thought I’d share it.

My class is counting down the days until they get to do some Halloween-themed activities and this will tie in perfectly to our poetry unit later this term. (I think I’ll have my Preps and 1s write their own I’m a Little Teapot alternatives towards the end of term.)

Click on the picture, and enjoy!

Currently: October Edition!

I’m linking up to Farley’s Currently October edition.

I had a fabulous day today catching up with my good friend, Ellen.

We were planning and booking extra bits and pieces for our trip to the USA over New Year. So it was very exciting and the closer it gets the more excited I’m getting.

I can’t wait to visit the States again. I loved it the first time and I know I’ll enjoy it just as much this time around. (I just wish I had more time/money to spend there…)

Tomorrow I’m planning on doing the aforementioned filing (well, some of it, perhaps) before school starts back on Monday. I’m also hoping to get a head start on some Halloween decorations so I’m not madly rushing the week before Halloween.

I’m planning to do more spiderweb again this year – I loved it so much last year. Might keep it around for the whole week this time.

Do you have big holiday plans this year?
