Way back when I created a whole series of Label the Superhero sets to use with my class. For obvious copyright reasons they’re not something I can sell, but rather than let them go to waste, I thought I would share them with my lovely readers, in case they’re something your students mind enjoy.

Hi all, it’s been a while.
I have been on holidays, but I confess that I’ve not been doing a whole lot (other than SHOPPING!) because I’ve really needed to decompress after the first term. Yes, it’s been one of those starts to the year.
However, I have completed all my planners for Term 2 (with the exception of my weekly breakdowns). I still have a couple of pre-tests to modify for my Grade 1s and a whole stack of laminating and cutting out to do.
But besides that I’ve done a LOT of shopping (hello, new wardrobe!) and a lot of creative writing (I write in an online game and despite starting with only one character in December I may have picked up another 2 along the way…!). I’ve also ordered my new Erin Condren planner for July 2014-June-2015 to replace my current one when it runs out this term, and I have a brand new Kikki-K Personal Planner, too, which I’m planning on using for organising the rest of my life and blogging and so forth. If you’d like pictures of those once they arrive, just let me know and I’m happy to share my attempt to get myself organised!
But, in the meantime, I have some font freebies for you!
(Note: I’m considering condensing my fonts into a single file on TpT, but that will take some time on my part. If that happens, I will let you all know!)
MGL Carrot Writer is available for free in my TeachersPayTeachers store. This font is perfect for headings/titles, alphabet matching cards, etc. I wouldn’t recommend it for large chunks of text because it could appear cluttered, but it definitely works for sprucing up titles and adding a bit of seasonal flair to your activity pages! MGL Smiley Writer is only available on my Miss Galvin Learns Facebook page (scroll down a few posts and you’ll see the above image with a link in the comments). This was to celebrate my Facebook page reaching 2000 likes which is BEYOND THRILLING for me!

Also… I’ve been floating the idea of doing a video post for my blog. Is that something you would be interested in seeing? And if so, what sort of content would you like to see (i.e.: a show and tell/demonstration of my products, a Q&A sessions, etc)?
This year I’ve jumped on the Elf on a Shelf bandwagon, and my class and I are having a ball.
It all started on November 29th, when my Principal got a special delivery, that was very cold and very fragile, and addressed to my class. (My Prin was awesome – she played it up so well for the kids who were just GIDDY with excitement.) She let them all feel the box and had a wonderful conversation going with them.
Then we opened the box…
Our elf – as yet unnamed – arrived complete with her book and a special Merry Christmas banner for our classroom. She watched the class from the box for the rest of the day.
By a very democratic vote, she was named Elfina by the children in the class.
What was really, really lovely, though – at lunchtime (just after she arrived), a group of my Grade 1 girls were running around to the yard duty teachers to tell them all about the elf that had arrived to watch their classroom and report back to Santa. Their excitement was just gorgeous.
And it’s yet to disappear.
Every morning this week the students have run into the classroom and LOOKED for Elfina to see what she’s gotten up to. They usually drag along parents, grandparents, siblings, and anyone else they can find to see what she’s been doing.
Here’s our week in pictures:
On Monday, Elfina hung up our Merry Christmas banner… then hung around and watched the class from the wall for the day.
On Monday afternoon we were building things with Lego… so when we came in on Tuesday morning, Elfina and Pete had been hard at work building a house and a Christmas tree!
On Wednesday she got tangled up in the Christmas lights she bought the class for our Christmas tree.
(Side note – it was pouring down with rain on Wednesday and the kids were stuck inside ALL DAY. Whenever someone walked into the room, the first thing the kids shouted out was ‘DON’T TOUCH THE ELF! SHE’LL LOSE HER MAGIC!!’ So not kidding!)
On Thursday, Elfina took a nap in the tissue box. Popular theory is she was partying at the North Pole over night. 😉
The kiddos were quite put out by the fact that they couldn’t access the tissue box. We had to dig out a spare box for the day. Just in case.
Earlier in the week we made ELF acrostic poems and the kiddos drew their own elves to decorate their poems.
Well… Elfina spotted a remarkably accurate likeness on the wall and had to point it out!
We also spend 15-20 minutes each day journalling about Elfina’s adventures in our An Elf’s Life journals. (I forgot to take photos – but I’ll take some next week to share because they’re just GORGEOUS!) My kiddos have done such a wonderful job on them. We brainstorm a list of important words they might need for the one or two sentences and then they go and write. I don’t have to prompt – they’re SO excited to write about what Elfina is doing that there are no complaints, no one sitting around staring into space…
Seriously, I need something like this all year ’round!

Hello and welcome to another Text Talk Tuesday.
Today I’m going to share a wonderful story, by a fabulous Australian author/illustrator with you:
Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley by Aaron Blabey is a wonderful, heart-warming story. To give you a taste, I’m going to share the blurb with you (my Little Smarties are always asking to hear the blurb!):
Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley are the best of friends. But they are different in almost every way…
Pearl likes solving mysteries and moves rather fast in the world.
Charlie likes taking baths and watching his garden grow.
So how can Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley be such good friends?
This book is a wonderful tale of difference and the power of friendship. It is beautifully illustrated by Aaron Blabey (whose books are all stunning and sit among my favourites collection), and I dare anyone to read it and not be moved by the friendship of the outgoing Pearl Barley and the shy and unassuming Charlie Parsley.
One great activity to follow on from the task is to do a comparison of the characters of Pearl and Charlie – this is a great opportunity for a venn diagram!
If you click the image above you can download 2 venn diagrams – one comparing Pearl and Charlie, and one where students can work in partners and write down the traits that are uniquely theirs and then the things they have in common.
I cannot recommend this book enough, and I hope that there are teachers out there (or even parents) who give this book a go. I promise you will not regret it!

Oh my goodness, I’m SO happy this week is over. I cannot believe how tired I am! Planning week sure takes its toll!
I’m glad I have a whole weekend of NOTHING planned. Just rest and relax before the last week of term.
But it’s Friday, and that means…

On Saturday night I actually went out (shock! horror!) and had a lovely dinner with friends and then saw The Woo-Hoo Revue play at The Speigeltent, currently located at Melbourne’s Arts Centre. Great night out. Probably shouldn’t have worn my heels – my feet were so cramped by the end of the night (or, should I say, by the wee hours of the morning…)!

On Sunday evening my Mum and I went to see Cirque du Soleil’s Ovo, playing down at the Docklands. This is my 2nd Cirque du Soleil exprience this year (I saw O in Las Vegas), and my Mum’s first, and it was awesome. Mu Not only were all the performances AMAZING, but it was such a fun atmosphere. Mum and I had fun browsing the souvenirs. I’m such a sucker for show artefacts. We both bought gorgeous handbags (must take a photo of mine), taking my total Cirque handbags up to 2, plus CDs and programs and a glowing egg that’s my new “Teacher is Busy” signal for Reading Groups.
Plus, Mum and I decided that we will see Cirque du Soleil whenever they’re in town from now on.

My kiddos (ok, my Preps) were practising counting to 10 this week. Bright pipe-cleaners, coloured star beads = LOVE!

Finally changed out my thematic book stand – we’re well-prepared for the last week of Term!

Finally, today the Preps (all 7 of them) and I celebrated our Letter/Sound of the Week – N – by making these fabulous headbands from The Moffat Girls. (‘Scuse the photo – I’m so not talented at the self-photos on the iPhone!) Unfortunately, my Grade 1s were a teensy bit jealous… so we’ll ALL be making headbands next week for Easter!
Today while we were celebrating the number 10 I was spontaneously making up variations on Ten Little Indians with my kiddos.
Thus, I have to seasonal (well, one of them’s Aussie seasonal) variations for you!

LISTENING: I’ve been loving listening to Of Monsters and Men, especially their song “Little Talks” which my kiddos love listening to as well. It’s got quite a fun little tune to it.
LOVING: All the math game ideas I’ve been getting from Mel (From the Pond) and Brooke (Teachable Moments). I’m really not a math person and so I find it hard to think up great little games – but these girls have been fab the last week or so. I’m spending my weekend making up some of their games and activities for my class this week!
THINKING: I’ve got a decent amount of money sitting in my Scholastic Rewards bank and I’m really considering getting an EasiSpeak microphone for my class to use. I’m thinking they could record their reading at home one night, or even in the classroom, and then I’ve got a bank of their recordings. (Also, very good for them to ‘hear’ their reading back as well.)
WANTING: I know lots of you love hot Summer weather, but I’m desperate for Winter. I loved being in the cold weather in the U.S. over Christmas. You can always put more clothes on to get warmed, but when the mercury rises you can only take off so much clothing… (and still be decent!)
NEEDING: Air-conditioning. I know we’re in Autumn now, but Melbourne gets hot, dry heat and teaching in a glass and metal building with NO air-conditioning and broken windows (that are run electronically) has not been fun for me or the kiddos.
LIKE. LOVE. HATE.: Pretty self-explanatory – I like me some silliness, and I love singing songs with the kiddos (this week we’ve been learning the Date Song and the Days of the Week song). I hate supermarkets because they’re always busy when you’re in a hurry. Like today. Sigh.
So, this week I went on a font-making binge because I’m in a terrible state of TpT writer’s block. Oh well.
(Perhaps I should have charged for my fonts? Ok, not really. They’re not THAT good, lol!)

You can also purchase MGL Spring Writer Ext for $1 which includes the accents and misc options (for a total of 195 characters, as opposed to the standard alphabet of 99 characters). I only put the charge on this one because it took a while longer to make.
It’s my first time linking up with Five for Friday (I blame being overseas!). What a great way to review the week that’s been!
1. My new nails (done by the very talented Nancy!). They’re bright, fun and very Summer. Plus, my nails actually have a bit of length on them, which definitely won’t last once school starts back, but for now they make me happy!
2. My new classroom name tags for bag lockers and chair bags! I was inspired by something I saw on Pinterest aaaaages ago, and now I can’t find the original post. 😦 Can someone help me, because I so don’t want to take credit for these – the original poster is my hero!
3. So, while I was in Disneyland I found this hat (it lights up and changes colour based on sound frequency/etc). I had to buy it… and then I came up with a completely plausible reason for having it (and yes, I did it in that order!) – it’s my new bright idea hat. Whenever one of my lovely students shares a fabulous idea – one of those great ‘aha’ moments, etc – they’ll be able to turn on the Mickey Mouse ears and feel proud of their bright idea! (A little cheesy, but I love myself some Disney-inspiration!)
4. While browsing through my Writing board on Pinterest, I stumbled back across this pin from Teaching with Love and Laughter. Because my goal, this year, is to have a Writing table near my word wall, I made up some topics to write about cards. They’re super-cute and I can’t wait to put them up in my room!
5. I spent ALL of today attempting to sort out my classroom ready for next week. It’s all set up – I still have LOTS of organisation to do, but I’m pretty happy with how it looks at the moment. Can’t wait to have some student work to put up on my rainbow wall! See my panorama view below (look at how tiny my room is!):
It’s scary to think how quickly the holidays have gone. I only have 3 more days of (Sat/Sun/Mon) before starting work again on Tuesday! We have 2 pupil-free days (meetings, planning and professional development sessions are held on these 2 days).
Then my Grade 1s starts on Thursday and my Preps start on Friday. (And yes, that’s a teeny bit frustrating for me. Sigh.)
Can’t wait to have my whole class together, though! They’re a beautiful group of kids and I’m predicting that we’re going to have a great year!
